The City of Cape Town invites suitably qualified and motivated individuals to apply for the Metro Police and Traffic Learnership Programme 2026 under the Human Resources Department, Directorate: Corporate Services. This programme aims to develop competent and disciplined law enforcement professionals committed to maintaining safety and order across the city.

Requirements
To be considered for the learnership, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Grade 12 qualification (documentary proof required)
- Be a permanent resident within the City of Cape Town’s jurisdiction (proof required)
- Be proficient in English and at least one other official language
- Be 18 years or older and under 35 years of age
- Must be medically and physically fit to undergo strenuous physical training
- Must be able to work under pressure and in a team environment
- No criminal record, pending cases, or misconduct history
- Valid Code B driver’s licence (manual transmission)
- Must be unemployed as of 7 January 2026
- Must successfully complete the FET Certificate: Road Traffic Law Enforcement and Law Enforcement Skills Programme SP4/2012
- No visible tattoos when wearing the service uniform
Fitness Assessment Requirements
All shortlisted candidates must undergo compulsory physical fitness tests. Failure to meet any requirement will result in elimination from the process.
- 2.4 km run: Males – 12 minutes | Females – 14 minutes
- 1 minute push-ups: 30 in 60 seconds
- 1 minute sit-ups: 30 in 60 seconds
- Dead load carry: 2 x 25kg weights over 100m
- Tyre drag: 20m distance
- Shuttle runs: 10 runs in 60 seconds
- 2.1m wall climb
- Motorcycle reach test
- Comfort swim (any stroke, unassisted)
Note: Pregnant candidates are not permitted to undergo the physical assessments.
Additional Selection and Assessment Criteria
Successful candidates will also be required to:
- Pass a written assessment, interview, and medical evaluation
- Submit fingerprints and ID numbers for criminal checks
- Undergo drug testing, driver assessments, and psychological evaluations
- Adhere to the Public Safety Training College’s Code of Conduct and pass requirements
Special Conditions of the Programme
- No guarantee of permanent employment after training
- Candidates previously dismissed from local government for misconduct will not be considered
- Applicants must not have any chronic illnesses or physical impairments that hinder training
- Candidates who withdraw or fail the programme due to disciplinary issues must refund the City
- Must be willing to:
- Wear a uniform and work shifts in all weather conditions
- Be deployed anywhere within or outside the City’s boundaries
- Maintain physical and mental fitness
- Undergo additional or ongoing training and psychological evaluations
Candidates are prohibited from engaging in private business or external employment during the programme without written consent from the City.
